The 11th January saw the Ladies 1s returning to the hockey field after a much needed break.
After a christmas break of (most) of the girls sending strava updates of their workouts, we were expecting a high tempo performance.
They travelled to Winnington Park in good spirits which was helped by Spraggs providing off field entertainment, running over Bev's hockey stick bag with her car. Luckily the only casualty were some 'indestructible' shin pads and a tube of deep heat, saving the new £200+ hockey stick.
With an intense warm up the girls head were back in the game and dominated the early stages. Winning early short corners, 1 of which was calmly converted from a straight strike from Spraggs. Greys 2nd goal came shortly after with great counter attacking play through the middle and a calm reverse stick lift from Sophie meaning the girls were 2-0 up after 15 minutes. Some fantastic hard work from the defence to keep winnington park out of the D meant that they had very few opportunities but some intense pressure in the middle of the pitch and quick counter attack brought the score to 2-1 just before the half time whistle.
The second half started intensely from both sides with some hard tackles and quick play. Greys showed their strength when a lifted cricket shot from Spraggs took everyone by surprise as it hit the back of the goal. The intensity continued and the defence stood strong to keep Winnington Park at bay. Greys had a number of opportunities to extend their lead but some good saves by their keeper and some wide shots, one of the most impressive was a Cate special... aimed at Spraggs and Sophie's head.
The game ended 3-1 and with other results going their way, Greys 1s find themselves 9 points clear at the top if the table.
Player of the match was Spraggs for hard work and running on and off the ball.
Donkey goes to Spraggs for running over Bevs kit.
